The pearl is the oldest known gem, and for many centuries it was considered the most valuable. Unlike all gems, the pearl is organic matter derived from a living creature - oysters and mollusks. This gemstone is one of the oldest ones known to man and these days come in a wide variety of sizes, quality and colour. The most valuable ones are those that are rare because they grew randomly in the sea. There are nowadays farms cultivating pearls and generally they are made in freshwater.
The value of a pearl, like most other gemstones, depends largely on how rare it is and of course its qualities as a gem, including lustre, iridescence and overall colour. Generally, the black pearls from Tahiti are considered the most valuable however, there are historical reasons why some pearls may fetch an even higher price.
