Smokey Quartz

Smoky quartz or Smokey quartz is a brown to black variety of quartz caused through the natural (or artificial) irradiation of aluminium-containing rock crystal. The colour of smoky quartz is variable from brown to black and sometimes smoky grey collared specimens are included as smoky quartz. The cause of the colour of smoky quartz is in question but it is almost certainly related to the amount of exposure to radiation that the stone has undergone. Natural smoky quartz often occurs in granite rocks which have a small but persistent amount of radioactivity. Most smoky quartz that makes its way to rock shops and to some gem cutters has been artificially irradiated to produce a dark black colour.

Gemmological Characteristics:

Smoky quartz is a microcrystalline variety of the mineral Quartz (SiO2). Quartz is the most abundant single mineral on earth. It makes up about 12% of the earth's crust, occurring in a wide variety of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.

Macroscopic crystals commonly occur as horizontally striated hexagonal prisms terminated by a combination of positive and negative rhombohedra forming six sided pyramids. Prism faces and/or rhombohedra terminations may be lacking, poorly developed or predominant resulting in diverse possible crystal habits. Trigonal tapezohedral faces can occur in the upper right or left of alternating prism faces identifying right or left handed crystals, respectively.

Holistic Properties:

Smokey Quartz stimulates the cooperation of multiple energies toward a common goal. This is a wonderful stone for relationships, and particularly good for those in recovery and part of large groups or communities. It is a gentle grounding stone that instills balance and harmony, and can help bring peace to you, enhancing quiet reflection during meditation without the interference of the thinking mind.

Natural smoky quartz comes from many sources around the world. A few of the more noteworthy locations include Brazil, and the world's largest supplier; Pikes Peak area of Colorado, USA, where it is associated with green amazonite; and the Swiss Alps, which has produced many tons of fine specimens.
