Name:

Agate is a chalcedony (pronounced kal-sed-on-ee) distinguished by characteristic colours and banding. The bands can be multicoloured or of the same colour.

Blue lace agate is one of the rarest and most popular of the agates.

Description:

Agate occurs in an infinite amount of colours and patterns, and no two Agates are alike. The extraordinary beauty and uniqueness of Agate is responsible for its great popularity.

Agate must be polished to bring out its full charm; unpolished specimens are dull and ugly. It usually forms in rounded nodules or knobs which must be sliced open to bring out the internal pattern hidden in the stone.

Gemmological Characteristics:

Chemically agate is the same as tiger’s eye, which is petrified wood and jasper, and physically the same as quartz. Petrified wood is actually agate that has replaced some of the organic matter in the tree, slowly and over a long period of time. The structure of the tree will remain but the tree inside is a fossil.

Most agate is found in North America. Some moss agate which is any colour from white to green has been found in Yellowstone National Park and Yellowstone River of Montana. Lace agate which is translucent blue and white in colour can be found in Texas, Mexico and South California.

History:

Agate is the oldest stone in recorded history. Agates have been used in jewellery since Biblical Babylonian times. They were used to ward off storms, and were prized gems in antiquity. The agates with banded colours were placed at the head of a sleeper to give rich and varied dreams.
