The Celts and Romans regarded this month as the beginning of spring and the word is thought to come from 'februra' with means purification and reflects many rituals undertaken before spring.
Around 400 years ago, February was called 'Feverell', and around one hundred years later it had become 'Februeer'. The modern name is thought to be only about a hundred years old.
